I highly recommend Med School Insiders video on how residency matching works! ▶ link

It was actually similar to med school admissions in the sense that programs would extend offers on a rolling basis (and super early at that — contracts were sometimes signed as early as two years prior to start date) and then they give you a limited amount of time to accept or reject without considering offers from other places. The first 1.5 minutes of this video briefly touches on the history: ▶ link

If 5 programs all rank you at the top of their list. You go to whatever program you rank the highest. You will always end up at the highest place on your rank list that also wants you. It doesnt matter if Program A ranks you at #40 and Program B ranks you #1. If a you rank A before B you would go to A (as long as A falls to you on the list) ▶ link ▶ link ▶ link
