If you are a med student then you're a woman. If you're a PD then you're a man. It matters because the women (applicants) end up with the best set of stable pairs for their preferences while the men (PDs) end up with the worst set of stable pairs for their preference. It used to be flipped but they switched it in our favor in the 90s per ▶ this video

you need to watch the▶ follow up video where they explain all the implications and how you can't game it by lying (ie. ranking a program higher that is not actually your preference)

…there is no benefit **for the applicant** from reporting anything other than their true preferences (which is good!). But **for the program**, there could be a theoretical benefit to untruthfully ranking applicants. See this comment on a ▶ wonderful video on the underlying algorithm behind the match (where women are the “proposers”, i.e. medical students, and programs are the proposed side) > “It's no advantage to…

…actually corr … ngly, when the match was first being devised there were discussions to flip the algorithm, so programs were advantaged and we would all be left playing games with our rank list. I am glad that didn't happen. A quote from ▶ wikipedia of course "Among all possible different stable matchings, it always yields the one that is best for all men among all stable matchings, and worst for all women. It is a…
