Most people in medicine don't actually understand how The Match and the Gale-Shapley algorithm work so they say it's "random". This is the best video I've seen explaining how The Match and Stable Marriage Problem/Gale-Shapley algorithm works: ▶ Residency Match using Pokemon

…happening. If you front load your rank list with big name programs, then the assumption is that you'd prefer to be there over the new program, and the algorithm will match you as such. If you prefer the new program over the big name programs, then rank as such so you'll actually end up there. If you're curious about how the algorithm works, this video is a good start: ▶ link (Or just google stable marriage problem.)
